How Safe Sleeping Can Prevent SIDS

[sharethis]

Sleeping newborn babySIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) is a tragedy that most parents don’t even want to contemplate. SIDS, which is the leading cause of death for infants between 1 and 12 months, is still somewhat of a mystery, but experts have determined that safe sleep practices can greatly reduce your child’s risk.

The “Back to Sleep” and “Safe to Sleep” campaigns started in the 1990s have resulted in fifty percent fewer deaths from SIDS, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.

HALO® is an award-winning company that has been dedicated to creating safe, comfortable products for infants and babies for over 20 years. The founders of HALO are a husband and wife who lost their own baby to SIDS and are now committed to providing parents with products that help reduce the risk.

In honor of October’s Sleep Awareness Month, they have provided us with this valuable list of safe sleep tips and are also offering to give away one of their wonderful products!

Simply click the “Share” button you’ll find at the top of this post. By doing so, you’ll share these important sleep rules with your Facebook friends… and maybe even save a life!

(I’ll randomly choose winners from those of you who share!)

Simple Baby Sleep Rules

ALWAYS

  • Place baby to sleep on his or her back at naptime and at night time.
  • Use a crib that meets current safety standards with a firm mattress that fits snugly and is covered with only a tight-fitting crib sheet.
  • Remove all soft bedding and toys from your baby’s sleep area (this includes loose blankets, bumpers, pillows and positioners). The American Academy of Pediatrics
  • suggests using a wearable blanket instead of loose blankets to keep your baby warm.
  • Offer a pacifier when putting baby to sleep. If breastfeeding, introduce pacifier after one month or after breastfeeding has been established.
  • Breastfeed, if possible, but when finished, put your baby back to sleep in his or her separate safe sleep area alongside your bed.

NEVER

  • Never put your baby to sleep on any soft surface
  • Never dress your baby too warmly for sleep; keep room temperature 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit. (20 – 22 degrees Celsius)
  • Never allow anyone to smoke around your baby or take your baby into a room or car where someone has recently smoked.

Good luck with the contest! And feel free to check out HALO’s adorable new micro-fleece designs below:
